Institutional validation workshop of the traditional literacy benchmark
The workshop is organized by the UNESCO Office in Libreville as part of the support to the General Directorate of Civic Education and Literacy in Gabon to have a better readability in literacy programs, educational tools, training trainers involved in the centers.
According to the REGEPT, the literacy rate for 15-24 year olds is more appreciable nationally (85.4%) and urban (87.1%) than in rural areas (64.4%). The literacy rate of women is higher than that of men at the national level (85.8% against 85%). This implies that a high proportion of young people and adults, both men and women, can read, write and count. The literacy level of 15-24 year olds in Gabon is higher than the African average for this age group and for all developing countries. On the basis of data from the 2013 General Census of Population and Housing, 13.5% of the resident population claims to be uneducated, 15.2% for women and 11.9% for men. 30.2% in rural areas and 11.1% in urban areas, both with a majority of women.
Gabon committed to fight against illiteracy through the General Directorate of Popular Education (now Directorate General of Civic Education and Literacy, DGECA), body responsible for the adult literacy, created in 1961 within the Ministry of National Education. However, there is no readability in literacy programs, educational tools, training of trainers involved in the centers.
UNESCO supports the government in implementing activities to improve the training of young people in literacy centers. Since 2015, this support has focused on the development of training benchmarks for traditional literacy and functional literacy, the training of trainers at the centers, and the testing of the implementation of benchmarks produced in the pilot centers by around 20 trainers under the program. the control of supervisors previously trained during a workshop and followed by two consultants.
The breakdown of the standards requires that an evaluation of the experimentation be carried out to allow remediation and validation by the ministerial authorities. These missions will be entrusted to the two consultants who lead the process since the evaluation of the '' tools '' of the literacy centers in April 2016.
