BEAR II Project launch workshop
The Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR) II is a five-year UNESCO project supported by the Republic of Korea, to be implemented from 2017 to 2021 in selected countries of Eastern Africa, namely Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, the United Republic of Tanzania and Uganda. The BEAR II project is aligned with UNESCO Strategy for TVET (2016-2021) and aims at enhancing the relevance, quality and perception of the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) system in the beneficiary countries through specific sectoral interventions. This objective is to be achieved by means of improving the capacity of the TVET systems to anticipate and assess demand for skills in specific priority sectors, to translate the results into relevant programmes and to ensure appropriate information dissemination and counselling services for learners.
The official launch will mark the completion of the BEAR II project’s formulation phase as well as the beginning of the inception phase. The event will consist of a workshop followed by study visits to TVET institutions and meeting with stakeholders, and a final meeting to discuss the outcomes of the workshop and the way forward to implement the project.
The launch event will provide a platform to hold discussions among the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea, UNESCO and the representatives of beneficiary countries of the BEAR II project.
The five beneficiary countries of the first phase of BEAR Project, implemented in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, will participate in the launch event. The BEAR I country representatives will share their experiences in relation to the main outcomes of the project in their country: Botswana – Curriculum reform in the tourism sector; Democratic Republic of the Congo – TVET teacher training and TVET schools management; Malawi – Sector skills council in the agro food processing sector; Namibia – enhancing TVET attractiveness through the National skills competition; and Zambia – TVET Management Information Systems. This knowledge sharing exercise between the BEAR I and II beneficiary countries and other stakeholders will also allow to plan post project follow up activities in BEAR I countries.
Lastly, the study visits to TVET institutions, small and medium enterprises, business incubators etc. and meeting with national stakeholders in the Republic of Korea will provide the participants with an opportunity for peer learning and knowledge sharing.
